Narratives Behind Dhanteras
According to the scriptures, Lord Dhanvantari, the god of medical science, appeared during the ocean churning on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. Therefore, this day is celebrated as Dhanteras. Because when Lord Dhanvantari appeared, there was an urn in his hands, so buying utensils or silver on this day is considered auspicious.
According to another legend, in ancient times, there lived a king named Hem. After many years of marriage, he had a child. When the astrologers saw the child, it was found that the prince would die just four days after his marriage. On knowing this, the king and queen became very sad. Gradually time passed, and the prince married Gandharva. Four days after the wedding, the Yamdoots went to take the life of the prince, but seeing the mourning of the prince’s wife; he asked Yamraj that there is no way that humans cannot die prematurely. Explaining its remedy, Yamraj said that on the night of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, a person who will light a lamp in the south direction could avoid premature death. Since then, the tradition of burning lamps started on the day of Dhanteras.
