COVID-19: A Pandemic Outbreak that could have Taken Lives of 90% Population

The world was not even out of the trauma caused due to the Australian bushfires, and there was a new problem ready for humanity, named COVID-19. It is not just a virus but can be predicted as a catastrophic event which would be remembered for ages in the coming times. COVID-19 can be termed as an apocalypse which is still a threat to the human race. The experts at Imperial College, London say that this pandemic could have killed at least 40 million people around the world if the right safety measures were not put in place to fight it.

In this article, we will be sharing a lot of things about the novel coronavirus which will help you know how it could have been a catastrophe if the things were not done at the right time in our country.

What is COVID-19 (novel coronavirus)?

The coronavirus is the mutant virus which causes diseases in animals. On entering into the human body, it causes the symptoms which are very much related to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which was also a fatal disease that occurred in 2002. The COVID-19 can be explained properly as a respiratory disease which can spread from human to human, and hence it is an infectious disease. This first positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected in Wuhan, China.

Although, the experts have failed to find out the cause of the origin of the pandemic. Some experts believe that it must have originated from the very famous ‘wet market’ of Wuhan that sells both live and dead animals for consuming purposes. They say that these markets are the hub of various infections and are a threat to humans. Let us pray and wait for the pandemic to get over so that our experts can find out the main cause of the infection.

Causes, Symptoms & Complications of COVID-19

The COVID-19-causing virus probably originated from an animal source, but now spreads from person to person, being a contagious disease. The virus is assumed to spread through the respiratory droplets released when an infected individual sneezes or coughs. It is spread mainly amongst people who are in direct contact with each other, i.e. within 6 feet. Sometimes it may also be possible for people to get infected by touching the objects or surface that have been exposed to the virus. It is said that the virus can stay alive for at least 8-12 hrs on the surface of the objects. The infection aggravates when people touch their contaminated hands to their nose, eyes, and mouth.

The reported people suffering from COVID-19 infection have shown the symptoms of mild to severe respiratory disease. Experts have assumed on the basis of MERS-CoV that the incubation period of COVID-19 is from 2-14 days. Within these fourteen days, you will start showing the symptoms of the disease, which are

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Chest congestion
  • Body ache
  • Flu
  • Diarrhoea, in extreme cases

The complications of the disease are pneumonia and multi-organ failure, which leads to fatality.

Safety Measures to be Taken

  • The first thing which is to be paid attention to is that you should not have travelled abroad or in the country.
  • If travelled, then it is suggested that they need to be on self-quarantine for at least 14 days.
  • Avoid going to crowded places, as there are chances that you can get infected.
  • Always make sure that you wear a facemask whenever you are going out of the house, irrespective of your travel history.
  • Carry a more than 60% alcohol-based sanitizer and rub it on your hands whenever you get in contact with any external surface.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands to deter any contamination.
  • Deter sharing of things between you and your family
  • Get your house sanitized by getting in contact with the government officials, as they are providing the sanitization services.
  • Keep a check on your health and if you find any related symptoms, then make a call to the nearby doctors before visiting them.
