Valentine’s week: 90s vs 20s

Valentine’s day is the one to express your emotions and affection. These days every couple, young and old, make plans to spend their day together. Well, now it sounds easy but do you how it was in the 90’s? We all can agree that the 2000’s era has bought the most change in the world. Whether be it in terms of technology, lifestyle, or belief patterns. Likewise, the celebrations of festivals and occasions have seen some drastic modifications as well.

Love in the 90’s was more of a private thing. Unlike in the 20’s, there were no cell phones to talk. The basic mode of communication was writing letters and handing them over somehow. It just sounds romantic and magical now, doesn’t it? Anyways, let’s see how lovers made valentine’s week count back then.

Rose day

Nowadays, people celebrate rose day in style. They hand over a giant bouquet to impress their loved ones. Moving back in time, it was only possible for some guy to have the guts to hand over a rose to a girl. Even more, girls could not easily carry that rose along with them to avoid any unwanted questions. Let’s just say the term ‘private life’ was not considered a thing.

Propose day

In the 20’s, propose day calls for a lot of preparations and a scene to pour out your feelings. Earlier, proposing was not much of a thing. If it was, it directly called for marriage. In any case, the most common way was to pen down feelings on paper and hand them over. Alternatively, couples would meet up alone, away from the public, and talk their heart out. One thing that remained the same through time is that asking someone to be your companion takes a lot of nerve.

Chocolate day

Handing over chocolate or sweet delicacies has been a lovely gesture since ages. In our opinion, the tradition of chocolate day is just switched in numbers. Instead of a single chocolate, people prefer a chocolate bouquet or an exotic/ international chocolate. In the 90’s, the gifting was not limited to cocoa products. In fact, any sweet dish would serve the days’s purpose as intended i.e; to eliminate any bitterness.

Teddy day

You could simply not take a gifted stuffed toy home then. You know, it would raise a lot of questions. Some other common gestures to make the day count were to hand over candies or other small gifts which could be easily hided, just in case. Now, you can even send a giant teddy bear and show your efforts.

Promise day

Agree or not, promises were valued more in the non-digital era. Unfortunately, promises made now are just words that are only honored sometimes. On the bright side, there are still people who stick to their promises, no matter what. Needless to say, with time, the kind of promises that are made have also changes. From ‘I’ll be with you through tick and thin’ to ‘I will bring everything you need’, we have come a long way.

Hug day

Hugging someone you love is the most relaxing and comforting thing ever. However, hugging publically as a couple was not taken as a token of love back then. Therefore, we can say that hug day was just another day in the life, nothing special. Although lovers craved to be in the arms of each other. But as they say, good things take time.

Kiss day

Well, we can’t even think about kissing, especially when even hugging was impossible, can we? Unlike now, kissing was usually prohibited for unmarried couples. Max to max, the one thing they could do is give a little kiss on the hand. We know how it is now, right? You can literally kiss in public places, not everywhere of course. Bottom line is that the element of shyness is wiped out.

Valentine’s day

Valentine’s day is all about date and gifts now. Couples dress up go on a romantic date, have food & drinks, and exchange gifts. More than a couple of decades ago, dates were not a thing. In fact, there were couple dates where people took their friends along to have a glimpse of their sweetheart. Or like we have seen in the movies, they go on a public place in group and make their way out somehow.

Valentine’s day

In a nutshell, love was simple and pure back then. There were no complications to deal with, besides family acceptance. But that’s sweet, right? Anyway, happy valentine’s day to all the couples out there. Cheers!
