Karwa Chauth - A Symbolism of Immortal Love

India is the land of festivals. It is the land where relationships are commemorated with high spirits. Such a festival is Karwa Chauth where Indian wives keep fast for the long life and well being of their husbands. They keep fast till they see the moon in the night. From sunrise till sunset, women even don’t consume a drop of water. The way of celebrating it has changed over the years, but sentiments and feelings for the festival remain as it is. In northern India, the festival is one of the biggest one and this year Karwa Chauth is on October 27. This festival is mainly celebrated by the married woman, but nowadays many girls of marriageable age also keep fast on their own will.

Usually, it comes in October or November as it is celebrated on the Hindu month of Kartik on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha or dark fortnight. Married women keep the fast for their husband’s long life and well being while unmarried girls fast to get a good partner or get married soon.

Rituals of Karwa Chauth

Women wake up early morning and they are presented with sargi (which is commonly understood as a festive breakfast) by their mother – in – laws. Sargi should be consumed before sunrise. They beautify themselves by wearing beautiful traditional clothes, applying Mehendi and makeup. They complete their household works on this festival and in the evening attend a pooja with other married women. An old married woman recites the stories and then women exchange their puja thalis by passing them around in circles. The thali has things like bangles, sindoor, Mehndi, bindi and other things that are said to be important for a married woman.

After the puja, women usually have a glass of juice or something to eat that is considered acceptable during fasts. Then they wait patiently for the moon to come up. In the night, the wife performs a ritual in which she looks at the moon and then at its reflection in the water which is reflected in the karwa. Then, she looks at it through a chhalani and then looks at their husband’s face, Along with the recitation of holy mantras which is followed by her pouring water from Kalash on the ground. After the completion of these all rituals, she relishes food and water for the first time during that day.
